ROMXe is an in-system programmable device that replaces the CD and EF ROMs, or CF ROM, and your Video ROM in your Apple IIe. It stores up to 15 ROM images, and presents them for selection via an on-screen menu system. In addition, the menu system itself (the ROMXe firmware) is updateable in-system. The ROMXe comes standard with an on-board clock (backup battery included).
What do we mean by In-System Programmable? This simply means that you can re-program ROMXe with your own ROM images and updates without removing the device from your computer, and without need for an external IC Programmer. Uploading of new ROM images is done through either the ROMXe boot menu, or by running the ROMX.DISK utility from the ROMXe floppy disk image. The firmware image is also upgradeable using the same process.
The ROMXe video ROM with ROM-Link cable (included) has 32 text ROMs (fonts) that can be selected from the ROMXe menu also, or associated with a specific system ROM. For Euro IIe 16 fonts are software selectable from two banks, and banks are selected by the keyboard switch under the front of the chassis. The USA IIe can also access all 16 fonts by a set of pads under on the underside of the 24-pin video ROM module where a switch (not included) could be soldered / connected. The large 32K banks can also hold DOS, ProDOS, and complete programs for instant loading on power up. The ROMXe is preloaded with a number of ROM images including basic diagnostics.
Hardware Requirements: ROMXe will work in any Apple IIe, including the Euro PAL and NTSC versions.
Comes as pictured, with ROMXe system ROM adapter, Video ROM adapter, and connection cable.
Note: Works with most accelerators! The ROM-LINK Riser option is only needed on early Euro motherboard where the RAM is too close to the ROMs. See the gallery pic for an example of the ROM-LINK option in use. If your RAM is socketed and close to the ROMs then you may require this option.
